ASTM A516 Gr 70 Rolled Plate is a medium carbon alloy that contains manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. These added alloying elements provide increased strength and versatility in highly demanding applications such as pressure vessels requiring moderate to lower temperatures where notch toughness is essential.
Supplementary testing such as Charpy Impacts, Ultrasonic Examination and Carbon Equivalency are available. All plates over 1-1/2″ Thick are required to be normalized. For more information see ASTM A516-70 Normalized
The ASTM A516 specification is the Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service for plates used in pressure vessel applications where excellent notch toughness is required. Four grades having minimum Tensile Strengths ranging of 55 ksi to 70 ksi are available.
ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate is also called out as ASME SA516-70. This steel plate grade is a medium carbon alloy that also contains amounts of manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. A516 is primarily used for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required. It is typically found in moderate and lower temperature applications. A516 is sometimes called PVQ516.
Supplementary testing such as Charpy Impacts, Ultrasonic Examination and Carbon Equivalency are available. All plates over 1-1/2″ Thick are required to be normalized. A516 is the most popular Pressure Vessel grade of steel plate in the industry. It is produced in grades 55, 60, 65 or 70. The most common is Grade 70 or called out A516-70.
Carbon: 0.27% (Max)
Manganese: 0.85%-1.20%
Phosphorus: 0.035% (Max)
Sulphur: 0.035% (Max)
Tensile Strength: 70-90 ksi
Yield Strength: 38 ksi
Typical Uses
A516-70 plate is a high strength, low alloy steel plate that offers an optimum combination of strength, weldability and notch toughness.
