FBE Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating and Lining
Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating protects pipe surfaces against corrosion. Double or triple layers of FBE may even increase the resistance to friction and abrasion. FBE coating is also used as the primer layer in 3-layer PE/PP coating systems.
Electrostatic epoxy powder is sprayed onto a pipe at a temperature typically around 220 - 235°C. On reaching the hot pipe surface, the epoxy powder melts and forms a uniform layer of epoxy coating on the pipe.
An internal FBE coating is used to protect the inner surfaces of steel pipes from the influence of corrosion and light mechanical impacts and it provides excellent resistance to cathodic disbondment.
The internal Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) system is based on an epoxy powder spray system, mounted on a lance. The lance moves through the pipe while the epoxy powder is sprayed onto the internal pipe surface. The pipe must be heated so that the epoxy powder melts onto the pipe. After FBE application, the layer requires curing.
  Coating System Materials selection
The epoxy powder wras certified (EP-621 and DR101/DR202 from same power production factory, EP-621 for internal coating application, will be suitable for use in the transport of drinking water and will not affect the water intended for human consumption. A certificate from a relevant water authority shall be submitted to the customer. The coating shall be able to withstand normal handling conditions expected during pipe installation. During production tests the engineer or his representative can witness any of the quality control tests, perform such tests himself on a random sampling basis as per testing frequency and/or review such certified test results at Arabian Pipe coating Company facilities.
All stated material full compliance with the specs M20 clause 4.3 Each batch of FBE powder shall be tested by XINGGUANG laboratory in accordance with AWWA C 213 for:
The following lining performance testing shall be done according to Sec. 4.4.3.7 of AWWA C213:
  • Thermal analysis (DSC)
  • Permanent train (bendability)
  • Water Soak
  • Impact
  1. The requirements and the standards of acceptability for inspection and testing shall be the same as in Sec. 5 of AWWA C213 supplemented and/or amended by the requirements mentioned in SWCC specs M20 clause 5.0.
  2. Calibration of Inspection Equipment shall be in accordance with M20 clause 5.2.1,
  3. Coating Materials Tests Shall be done according to Sec. 5.3.1 of AWWA C213
  4. Powder and Coating Systems Tests shall be done according to Sec. 5.3.2 of AWWA C213 and shall comprise the following tests:
  • Specific gravity
  • Sieve analysis
  • Gel time - hot steel plate
  • Appearance
  • Impact
  • Bendability
  • Shear adhesion
  • Penetration
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Water soak
