254 SMO stainless steel pipe is a super austenitic stainless steel with high molybdenum, nitrogen and low carbon content. S31254 is the first high-performance austenitic stainless steel specifically designed to use nitrogen for enhanced corrosion resistance and has excellent resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-containing waters. Stainless steel 254 SMO pipe allows cold forming of the pipe and can be used for testing up to 120°C without re-annealing. In some cases, UNS S31254 SMO pipe is considered to be a very economical and commercially viable solution for corrosion-prone applications.

254SMO pipe is resistant to chloride corrosion, one of the most notable qualities of stainless steel 254 SMO pipe is its resistance to marine environments, especially high temperature seawater. The salinity of seas varies around the world, with lower concentrations of sodium chloride in the water where rivers meet the sea. However, even the presence of about 3.5% salt is sufficient to corrode traditional alloy steels, and the corrosion rate is significantly lower due to the higher alloying content in the s31254 stainless steel pipe.
ASTM A312 UNS S31254 stainless steel pipe is resistant to heat corrosion, volcanic activity or the presence of any heat source will immediately increase the temperature of sea water. The combination of heat and the high concentration of sodium chloride accelerates the decay rate of conventional alloys compared to 254 SMO stainless steel welded pipe. Therefore, in many countries of the world, SS 254 SMO pipe suppliers recommend this alloy with up to 19% chromium, DIN 1.4547 stainless steel pipes forming a passivating oxide layer that prevents the alloy from rotting due to oxidation.
