254 SMO stainless steel pipe is a super austenitic stainless steel with high molybdenum, nitrogen and low carbon content. S31254 is the first high-performance austenitic stainless steel specifically designed to use nitrogen for enhanced corrosion resistance and has excellent resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-containing waters. Stainless steel 254 SMO pipe allows cold forming of the pipe and can be used for testing up to 120°C without re-annealing. In some cases, UNS S31254 SMO pipe is considered to be a very economical and commercially viable solution for corrosion-prone applications.

254SMO pipe is resistant to chloride corrosion, one of the most notable qualities of stainless steel 254 SMO pipe is its resistance to marine environments, especially high temperature seawater.
